Living Arts invites you to the opening of Sense-Vessel: Stimulating Porous Experience during the Brady Art District’s First Friday Art Crawl, July 7, 2017, at 5:30 with a talk by Tim Brown in the front corner space where his installation will be on display, followed by a live performance by S.E. Nash. The exhibit will be on display until July 21, 2017.This will be the Living Arts curatorial debut of our new Artistic Director, Jessica Borusky.

During the July 7th opening of "Sense-Vessels," S.E. Nash will make fermented kraut-chi, vegetable hot sauces and salsa through a culinary performance. Living Arts invites viewers to bring spring onions, turnips & greens, beets, hot peppers, and other vegetables, in order to contribute to the ferment that can be eaten/enjoyed during the artists talk on July 20th (bar opens at 5:30pm, talks will be 6-7pm).

S.E. Nash Artist Statement
My current work engages with microbial life through the inclusion of edible fermented foods as sculptural actants. The microorganisms involved become participants and sculptural collaborators. Their visible presence is a testament to our genesis and symbiosis with these unicellular organisms, and a reminder and that they comprise a large part of our multicellularity, while assisting us in being human. The sculptures I make complicate the relationship between animate and inanimate, as they perform environments for the ferments.

Tim Brown Artist Statement
My sculptural work and installations currently explore the intersection of the Light & Space movement, Arte Povera, folk art environments, and cheap science fiction props.  Many use inexpensive lighting effects and common materials to create mystical and otherworldly environments.  I hope that these visions evoke what Aldous Huxley called the “antipodes of the mind,” which are the traces of a world opposite of our waking life that contains universal truths and offers insight into the true nature of being.
