The corporate logo-emblazoned backdrop at red carpet events lures the public to gaze at a site for the "to-be-seen." I propose a series of wall installations - my own symbolic backdrop for such a spectacle. Each frame-shaped wall piece, compsed of dozens of ceramic tiles, invited viewers to stop and perhaps pose for photos. In doing so, the symbols I reference - Islamic tilework and architecture - move from background to foreground. Through texture, form, and fields of color, I aim to evoke an ambivalent modd - precious and intimate, but also extravagant and voyeuristic - transforming viewers' experience of the sacred and profane.
