With the success of the project “Transforming Hate” that Living Arts put together last year, we have put together a second project under the umbrella banner of “Art as a Vehicle for Social Change”. In May 2016, we were dealing with Homelessness in our community and have enlisted the help of several social service partners which surround the Arts District, but have not been engaged with the Art organizations. Our mission for this project is to increase awareness of homelessness in Tulsa, to break down stereotypes about homelessness and to give voice to the homeless artists who are in Tulsa. One of the many evens that are part of this campaign was 7 Stories/7 Doorways: eMerge. The eMerge Dance Festival has always had the mission of doing community engagement coupled with site specific performance and so the event is combining the dance-based program with collaborating with artists of other disciplines.

The event began with a process called Photo/Voice which has been used by Denni Blum, OSU professor of social justice classes in which interviews were conducted by Living Arts StoryCorps volunteers with homeless or previously homeless individuals in Tulsa. Night Light Tulsa, John 3:16 Mission, Works of HeART at the Day Center for the Homeless, and Denver House Mental Health Association Oklahoma all helped provide the location for these interviews. The Interviews were then transcribed and a synopsis was made from them. Artists, musicians, performers, spoken word artists, visual artists and dancers were invited to look at the synopsies online and vote for the ones they would like to work with in order to collaborate together on 10 minute presentations which would then be presented at the Kerr Warehouse, 12 N Cheyenne on Saturday, June 4th. These Collaborative Teams were formed and a leader surfaces who helped the group to continue working together throughout the development process. Regular meetings have been held to check in on development and now, we have the 7 Stories which will be presented at the Kerr Warehouse’s 7 Doorways. Working with the Synopsis taken from Homeless individuals from Tulsa, the following performances were presented at 9:00pm on June 4 at the Kerr Warehouse, 12 N Cheyenne:
